India ace batter Rohit Sharma has revealed an interesting insight behind wicket-keeper batter Rishab Pant’s injury in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final.
With India under pressure and South Africa requiring a run-a-ball score, Rishab Pant faked an injury during the tense moments of the match to break the Proteas’ momentum. The situation at that time demonstrated an easy win for South Africa with both explosive batters Henrich Klassen and David Miller at the crease.
However, Jasprit Bumrah did bowl an impressive over under pressure without leaking many runs, but the Rainbow Nation were still pretty much ahead in the game. The Men in Blue required something magical, and Rishab Pant provided it by faking an injury, which effectively paused the game and halted the Proteas’ momentum
At that moment, the players and everyone were worried about Pant due to his freakish accident from the past.
Speaking on India’s World Cup Triumph first anniversary, Rohit Sharma shed light on the nervy moment, stating he was also concerned about the southpaw’s situation.
“See, Hardik has come to bowl there. So, we were discussing with Hardik what to do. I didn’t know what had happened before. I genuinely thought that something had happened to him. The accident he had, I thought he was just trying to. But actually, it was just to stop the game a little bit. The momentum was with them. So, it was very important to break that. So, I think we went back to that. Eventually, Hardik dismissed Klaasen,” Rohit said.
It is noteworthy to mention that India won their second T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma’s leadership with a Virat Kohli special in the final. The batting maestro scored a vital innings of 75 in the final to take his team to a formidable total.
